Daido Moriyama once said “when I go out into the city I have no plan. I walk down one street, and when I am drawn to turn the corner into another, I do. Really I am like a dog. I decide where to go by the smell of things, and when I am tired, I stop.” Talk about simplifying things, it’s really that simple – trust your instincts, simplify your gear, and enjoy your photography.

A few years late to the party, but Moriyama’s philosophy seems to be summed up nicely in Swedish singer-songwriter Lisa Ekdahl’s song “Bortom det blå”:

“Jag går dit benen bär mig
Det ska inte va svårare än så”

    Roughly translates to
“I walk where my legs carry me,
It shouldn’t be more complicated than that”

Me too I like strolling around waiting for something to catch my eye. Now I am still waiting for the GR, getting more and more unpatient …

    • Hang in there, trust me the wait is worth it. Strolling with the GR will be like strolling with the IQ of a full blown DSLR in your pocket. Keep me posted! Cheers.

    So true.

    • Glad you agree. We over think our photography so much and as a result often times loose a lot of [X] fill in the “x” with whatever.

      • Yes, I think it’s best to get lost in the work and the process. The imagery will let you know when to pull back, take a look around, and review what you’ve been doing.

Jürgen, if you own the SEP2 plugin, how do you compare Grubba software’s True Grain vs the film grain tool in SEP2? Is it a visibly difference in the output?

    • Jürgen Metzler says

      Hola Carlos,

well i think you’ve got the answer still from Jorge 🙂 , anyway, the problem with SEP and all other film-simulations is their uniformity of the grain. It looks nice, no question, but when you took over 30 years b/w photos with film like me, and also developed it yourself, then you see a big difference comparing the simulations with real film. True Grain comes much closer when we talk about grain, the only thing I still miss are the smooth transitions between the grayscale’s, don’t know if this is possible in future with digital.

Anyway, I sold my Leica M (analog) now for the Ricoh GR, this camera is really a gem, I love it.

      • Hola Jurgen,

Well said, the key is the uniformity of the grain almost like an all or nothing type of gradation and hence they fail by the same sword, but on the other hand, the results from True Grain are simply outstanding and much better overall thus leading the competition in my humble opinion. Film will always have that randomness which is unparalleled but True Grain comes as close as its going to get in digital with the current technology.

  5. Jürgen Metzler says

    Hola Jorge,

just saw that you use SFX & VSCO for film simulation, you should try out ‘True Grain’ from Grubbasoftware as well, instead of algorithms they use real film grain for their software. As a long time film lover for me the best solution on the market so far. My favorite simulation is Fuji Neopan 400, i use for my Ricoh now the 6×4,5cm settings to get a decent look.

    • Jurgen, thanks for the tip.

        Hola Jorge,

I asked and waiting for the reply from Jürgen regarding the difference between GS True Grain and SEP2. But since you have already looked into this, what’s your view about the difference between the film grain tools from the above mentioned brands? Is there a visible difference from the output?

        /Carlos, Sweden

        • Hola Carlos,
