My Father – New Horizons

As I mentioned in a previous post my father recently underwent brain surgery. Imagine going in for a routine MRI because you’ve had some slight headaches and they tell you that you can’t go home because a few doctors must see you. Well, that was two weeks and a lot has happened. To say it that it was one of the most stressful situations I’ve ever encountered is an understatement. My father, always a stoic man, and all of a sudden a brain surgery is forthcoming, wow. I’m glad to report that his surgery went very well and he’s recovering in his home. Throughout these two weeks that I practically lived at the hospital and I took a chance to document the whole journey and I’ll be sharing that photoessay soon. I have to cull through 1500 images and select “X” to share this story. The goal is of this essay is to bring awareness to head injuries that might seem trivial but could have massive repercussion in someone’s health. The essay is forthcoming and …

Today, I have the great pleasure to review a legendary bag. A bag that will bring back similar memories from the days you use to wear, or perhaps still do, an old favorite pair of jeans. That classic look, you know the type, the type that just matches with everything, it creases on the right spot, and just gets better with time. Its almost magical the way it just wraps around your body and simply does it job. Its job is simple ― protect your precious gear with decorum and of course great usability. Folks, please welcome the Billingham Hadley Small, in my opinion, one of the best camera bags in this size division. When I first opened the box my eyes simply could not stop looking at the Hadley Small. The Black and Tan is simply stunning. Portrait of my Father

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything”, once said Aaron Siskind. I think this quote perfectly captures the spirt of what I’m trying to portray with this candid portrait of the man I love the most, my father, always stoic, always alert, always my dad. Love you dad, you’ll be ok in no time.

Aside: The Power of Love

Its difficult to concentrate on other things when one of the human beings you love the most, my father, is going through a trying time. That’s my father laying in bed reading a newspaper and just trying to relax while he waits for his scheduled surgery next week. Having brain surgery is probably one of the most difficult things to do as a medical practitioner and neurosurgeons are certainly up right up there. I pray that God puts his on my father and on the hands of the neurosurgeon that will be operating on him to stop his bleeding. Pray for him! See you all soon. Readers of this blog know that photography for me is an expressive art and that it soothes my soul and if I get the courage, I’ll share more of this story when I get the latest addition to my Fuji Kit ― the XF35mm 1.4. I’ll be back!

Tales of Latin Men

For Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans dominos represent a favorite past time for the men and women who play this game.  This table had a mix of all the aforementioned nationalities and their concentration was palpable in the air. Its the Latin chess, its the way of the Latin man and one that’s wholeheartedly embraced and passed on to future generations, its quintessentially a latin tradition ― dominos. I’m a huge fan of Zack Arias’s work and his philosophy on photography. I’ve watched his One Light series dvd a number times and I still learn every time I watch it. I don’t remember exactly where I heard Zack says the following quote (paraphrased) but he said “every time I get a new lens I shoot hell out of it to learn it in and out.
