Who are you and what’s your profession?
My name is Brian Dunlea. I’m a portrait and landscape photographer, but I dabble in street photography as well. I’m not a professional and I’m very new to photography. I started in January 2012 with a view to starting a songwriting site. I’ve been a drummer/singer/guitarist since I was 15. The plan was to take some photographs of my own for the site but the camera took over. It was a new way to express my creativity. It’s fair to say it has taken precedence over music.
I work in a music store as my day job, and a photographer as my all-other-times job. I’m honoured to say that people have been buying some of my landscape prints and hiring me for portrait/band work. It’s a whole new world for me. Put me on a stage and I’m at home. Being behind the camera and feeling 100% comfortable is a work in progress. But I’m heading in the right direction.
I’m also an X-Photographer. As far as I know I’m the only X-Tog in Ireland but I hope that changes because there are some amazing photographers here.
What’s your rig?
My main workhorse is a Nikon D800. I use the 16-35mm f/4 G lens for my landscape work. The rest are primes: 35 f/1.4 AIS, 50 f/1.4 G, 85 f/1.4 G. I bought the AIS lens because it would work on the D800 and on the fm2n I bought recently in Hong Kong. My first foray in to film.
I also use the Fujifilm X-Pro 1 with the 35 f/1.4 and the 14mm f/2.8. I own the 18-55mm but it’s a lens I have never really used. We just don’t get on. Last but not least my X100 is the camera that is closest to my heart. It goes everywhere with me, no exaggeration.
I use a Nikon SB-700 and a Nissin flash. I’m very new to flash so I’m finding my way slowly. I also use Lee filters, and two bags: Billingham Hadley Pro (everyday), and a Think Tank Streetwalker Pro (landscape) . I also use my iPhone a lot. It’s a great tool for concentrating on composition.
What hardware do you use?
I use and old 17” Macbook Pro. It’s about 100 years old with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It might be time to upgrade. As a back up I have a 500gb Western Digital drive. I delete a lot of images. I’ll be buying two 1tb drives soon.
What software do you use?
I use Lightroom. On the iPhone I use Vscocam and Snapseed.
What would be your dream rig?
I don’t think I have a dream rig. I have what I need. Maybe if I get busier I’d like to have a back up camera like another D800 or D600. If I get more heavily into film photography I’d love to have a Hasselblad 500cm someday but for now the FM2n is plenty.
What I will invest in will be an iMac and some Elinchrom lights towards the end of the year. But for now I’m happy.
What’s your favorite photography quote?
“Essentially, what photography is, is life lit up.”
