Ricoh GR: At Miami’s Hottest Night Club – Fifty

Last Thursday the Miami Heat went ahead to win double back NBA Championships and I was hired to shoot an event at one of Miami’s most exclusive night clubs ― the majestic FIFTY Ultra Lounge Miami at Viceroy. Like any other job, I went ready with all the guns ready to shoot. A Ricoh GR, a Pentax K5 IIs, and a Nikon dslr/zoom & SB 910 combo. The shots below are all the from the best compact in the world bar none ― the Ricoh GR. Once I reiterate, stop stereotyping the GR as a street photography compact, its not, its an all around camera that can do it all and I hope its evident from the images that grace this blog. Ricoh GR: Storytelling at its best

Ok, I’m going to be the one to say it. The new aps-c Ricoh GR is NOT only a street photography camera folks. This new camera can do it all. Documentary, portrait & candids, abstract, and yes, the infamous street photography, it can do it all, so please folks open your imagination and step out of the box. I just hate encasing this little jewel as a one type of genre camera. This is flat out silly. I respect everyone’s perspective but saying that this camera is one type of camera is simply not true. As time permits, I’ll be doing some more extensive strobist work with the GR (pocket wizards are very top heavy, I have another solution coming soon) to show you what this camera can do.

True Grain rekindles the glory of film

When I processed film  back in circa ’94 printing some those frames was almost like a magical experience. These days now in digital getting the correct film grain has been kind of a hit and miss with certain applications. As usual some work better than others, but in my opinion True Grain is in a class of its own.  At the suggestion of one my readers I downloaded “True Grain” from Grubbasoftware and I couldn’t be happier. Keep in mind that True Grain’s “raison d’etre” is as they mention on their own site to: accurately recapture the aesthetics of particular film stocks—including “lost” films—while retaining an all-digital workflow. The attention to detail of this application is simply outstanding ― a full review is forthcoming in the next few weeks. Is it better than Silver Efex? I like it better. Have you ever had a camera that screams at you “I can do it all!.” Well, I believe the Ricoh GR is one of them. I can do portraits, I can document inconspicuously, I can do street photography, what else do I want. Well, I have an idea, in my perfect world, I’d love a 85mm version of the Ricoh GR so I can do strict portraiture but I can’t have it all, though you have to admit, it would be nice. In the meantime, I have a perfectly capable Nikon dslr with a 50mm 1.8G that’s outstanding but I’m open to suggestions. Perhaps moving that part of my kit over to the Pentax-Ricoh side of things if they have something comparable in IQ and lens quality.
