Soy Cubano, Soy Popular

Have you ever had a camera that screams at you “I can do it all!.” Well, I believe the Ricoh GR is one of them. I can do portraits, I can document inconspicuously, I can do street photography, what else do I want. Well, I have an idea, in my perfect world, I’d love a 85mm version of the Ricoh GR so I can do strict portraiture but I can’t have it all, though you have to admit, it would be nice. In the meantime, I have a perfectly capable Nikon dslr with a 50mm 1.8G that’s outstanding but I’m open to suggestions. Perhaps moving that part of my kit over to the Pentax-Ricoh side of things if they have something comparable in IQ and lens quality.

Little Havana nice to see you again

Documentary photography is one of my favorite photography genres. Masters like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, and Sebastio Salgado have always been an inspiration. In 1994 I began my journey in this craft. The scent of fixer, D76, and Ilford paper were a constant reminder of those days. Developing and printing(reprinting) until the sun came out happened way to many to times enumerate, but what’s certain is that all those experiences have left an indelible mark and more importantly now, all that has been ported over to my digital world. Here’s a photoessay from a few weeks ago as I embark on new journeys with the Ricoh GR as my primary documentary tool these days. Saturday Market Place

Getting in the groove is not easy. Its actually quite tough, besides technique more than anything its your timing that’s lost. Little by little I’m getting it back though. I wasn’t going to publish this frame until Monday but what the hell a friend of mine, Don Springer, requested it, what are you going to do.

Smoking

When I take photographs, my body inevitably enters a trancelike state. Briskly weaving my way through the avenues, every cell in my body becomes as sensitive as radar, responsive to the life of the streets… If I were to give it words, I would say: “I have no choice… I have to shoot this… I can’t leave this place for another’s eyes… I have to shoot it… I have no choice.” An endless, murmuring refrain.

Captain Cane

Candid portraits have truly grown on me and I think its a style that really has the ability to truly connect with a human, especially someone on the streets, its a new vibe, and one that I think street togs should incorporate into their visual stream, or at least try some. Anyway, another “classic grd” moment I think. Let me lay out the scene. I saw Captain Cane across the street and as soon as I saw him, I just knew I had to have a frame. I walked up right up to him with my camera at chest level which I literally pulled up a fraction of a second before capturing this frame. Once again, I can not explain how versatile the Ricoh GRD III has become into my tool arsenal. Without hesitation, a digicam all street togs should add to their gear bags. Keep togging.
