Ricoh GR Review: 100 % Crop Samples

As part of my continued user based review of the Ricoh GR I just had to share a sample of what I’m viewing when I hit “z”(100% or 1:1 view) in my lightroom galleries. The amount of detail this 28mm lens resolves is truly outstanding. I really think that Pentax-Ricoh hit a home run with the GR. I took this image yesterday as I went to have dinner. The portability factor is another huge advantage of the Ricoh GR. Make sure you click on the images to really view them large. The image below is a 100 % crop The image below is a full resolution jpeg exported at 300dpi The image below is a 100 % crop of the image processed to my liking And finally the image processed to my liking exported at 300 dpi at full resolution

My first Ricoh GR gallery

Thoughts on handling and snap focus You know how they say that usually part two or three for that matter of any movie is usually not good, or at least not as good as the first one. Well, the Ricoh GR is a testament to that the fifth is the charm. In the weeks to come I’ll be expanding on each question of the poll but I have start somewhere. So far, the poll leading question is on handling (don’t forget to keep voting) and snap focus. So we’ll start with handling. Keep in mind this is a user based review of the Ricoh GR. I don’t do walls nor charts. If you have need to get the specs of the camera help yourself to DPReview. As soon as you hold the GR, you know you’re holding something special, its just that simple. Its funny because perhaps some of you out there reading this post have never handled a Ricoh GR Digital before and perhaps are even questioning what’s the big deal. Well, the Ricoh …

Ricoh GR Macros

I just received my Ricoh GR and words can not describe the feeling of joy and pure excitement. I setup a quick poll to get an idea on some of the things potential GR buyers want to hear about. Once I figure out how to put an audio file in the blog, I’ll upload my impressions as an mp3. Here are some quick snaps testing out the macro function of the GR. From the front of the lens fully extended you can get to about 3 inches from you macro target. I’ll have a few more shots tomorrow but check out the bokeh on the last shot, not to shabby for a compact ah. What blew me away was the 100% crop. The amount of detail is truly stunning.

Burnt Out

Can you try not to view any sites like DP Review for a month ? Is that to much. Fine, you can view the forums, that’s acceptable, forgo PetaPixel or any other photography site that falls in that category. Can you live without them for a month ? I dare you. I’m going try myself starting today. Its a challenge for most of us I know, but sometimes, I don’t know if it happens to you, but I get burnt out from all the news(noise) coming in from time to time. Its almost like no one cares about photography itself, they just care about what’s coming next. Don’t become a slave to the noise.

Snaps II

If you see something that moves you, and then snap it, you keep a moment ― Linda McCartney Yes, its as simple as that. Sometimes we over analyzed our photography to an extreme that can be paralyzing to our creativity. Forget that, pick up whatever camera you have on hand and simply enjoy your snaps. I’m telling you they’re so therapeutic, not all photography needs to be street photography, fine art, long exposure, portrait, or whatever. Just snap it. Personally, if I don’t press the shutter of a camera in 48 hours, I swear its a nerve wrecking environment. So in the meantime, I’m enjoying this new series ― “Snaps”.

Snaps

For no other reason than to move my body today I went out for a stroll, nothing in mind just strolling and taking some snaps. Today, I used the Ricoh GRD4 with the image setting of Bleach Bypass which is also included on the Ricoh GR. I can’t help but think how this type of photography will change with that camera. These reflect more or less my mood at that time ― crossed, confused, locked, uncertain, and just wondering what’s coming. Do you take snaps ?
